Reengineering Through Materials Substitution: Plastics as an Alternate Material for Metals

Materials selection is an essential part of design and manufacturing. Besides several other measure for cost savings, environment protection, and efficient production, substitution of materials can be an effective procedure in the automotive industry. The automotive industry has suffered greatly from economic depression worldwide. This paper comments on materials substitutions for cost reduction and performance improvements. Rationale is developed for arriving at a materials substitution decision.
