Low Energy Dynamics in Glasses Investigated by Neutron Inelastic Scattering

Neutron inelastic scattering has been used to investigate the dependence of the low energy atomic dynamics of the bulk glass NiPdP on quench rate and on annealing induced structural relaxation. A decrease of the low energy modes is found with decreasing structural disorder in accordance with expectations from different computer simulations. In spite of this result the calculated contribution of the vibrational entropy to the total entropy change in the transition from the glass to the super-cooled liquid remains small compared to the structural contribution.
