This paper summarises the findings of a Standards Measurement & Testing (SMT) European collaborative project to validate the draft standard for Instrumented Impact Testing (IIT) of metallic materials. Thirteen laboratories from different European States were selected on the basis of proficiency testing, to participate in a comprehensive test programme. The validation of IIT software was carried out by an Inter-comparison Exercise in which the data from a Reference Charpy Impact test was supplied in ASCII format and compared by eleven laboratories. Subsequently an IIT inter-comparison exercise was carried out by the participants to compare the repeatability and reproducibility data. Good agreement was found between the various laboratories using different software and different makes of machines conforming to the specifications in Document ISOITC 164/5C4 N191 (Rev 3) "Standard method for the instrumented Charpy V-notch impact test on metallic materials, Draft 10:1994". The results from this research investigation demonstrated the validity of the approach recommended in the draft standard for establishing the test method for Instrumented Impact Testing. The proposed draft ESIS Instrumented Charpy V-notch Impact Test method was published in May 2000 as EN ISO 14556: 2000 'Steel-Charpy V-notch pendulum impact test-Instrumented test method.'
