Reliable in-vitro methods for antimicrobial testing are essential for the development of new biocides, antimicrobial coatings and materials. These methods should be able to measure bacterial adhesion, proliferation and also should be able to quantify bacteriostatic or bactericidal properties of the materials surface. In this paper we present a new technique for testing antimicrobial properties of materials using a microplate system. By using this method we have been able to measure antimicrobial properties of different materials with high sensitivity in an automized way app. 100 times faster compared to conventional methods. As a selected example we present the method and its application for the development of nanosilver-doped polymeric materials which can have a broad spectrum of applications from medical devices to coatings and other hygienic sensitive areas.
