A Design Kit for Developing FPGA-Based Embedded Linux Applications

This reference design will demonstrate a complete embedded Linux application running in an FPGA. The design uses a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA based evaluation kit to implement a simple web-server application. Web pages are transmitted over Ethernet to the FPGA and are displayed on a monitor. The paper will describe several of the important design considerations when implementing Linux on a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGA. These considerations include the use of on-chip and off-chip memory, TCP/IP Ethernet implementation using a MAC IP Core, and the use of standard peripherals. A web-server example design will be used to show the capabilities of the design as a platform for application development. The reference design will be displayed in the reference design village.
