Lewis add metal salts and mineral adds have been evaluated as additives to accelerate the photocuring of charge transfer (CT) monomer complexes on cellulose. The CT systems used were maleate and maleimide/vinyl ether complexes. The advantages of using these new additives have been compared with utilizing free radical and cationic photoinitiators in these reactions. The additives have also been used to minimize the level of residual monomer, especially vinyl ethers, often found in cured CT films. The effect of these additives on concurrent grafting during cure has been investigated. The use of the additive technique as a unique one step method for synthesizing graft copolymers, per se, of novel structure has been examined. The work has been extended to the use of the additives in bulk photopolymerisation with applications in composite and IPN formation. A mechanism for this additive effect has been proposed.
