Liquefaction Resistance and its Relation to Wave Velocities

Correlations between liquefaction resistance and soil's anisotropy were investigated. Three different sample preparation techniques (air pluviated, moist tamped, and moist vibrated) were used for a medium dense sand to create the different initial soil fabrics. Cyclic triaxial tests were then conducted to determine the liquefaction resistance. On the same triaxial specimens, vertical and horizontal compression wave velocities, and vertical shear wave velocity (Vs) were measured using piezoelectric bender elements. It was found that when liquefaction cyclic stress ratios were normalized by Vs 5.0, liquefaction resistance curves emerged to a unique curve regardless of sample preparation techniques.
