Liquefaction Resistance and its Relation to Wave Velocities

Correlations between liquefaction resistance and soil’s anisotropy wereinvestigated. Three different sample preparation techniques (airpluviated, moist tamped, and moist vibrated) were used for a mediumdense sand to create the different initial soil fabrics. Cyclic triaxial testswere then conducted to determine the liquefaction resistance. On thesame triaxial specimens, vertical and horizontal compression wavevelocities, and vertical shear wave velocity (Vs) were measured usingpiezoelectric bender elements. It was found that when liquefactioncyclic stress ratios were normalized by Vs5.0 , liquefaction resistancecurves emerged to a unique curve regardless of sample preparationtechniques.
