Fundamental Study on the Collapse Analysis of VLFS in Waves

Time-domain analyses of collapse behavior of a pontoon-type VLFS in longitudinal regular waves are performed. Inelastic structural behavior is considered for the structural stiffness, while hydrodynamic forces are approximated by the linear wave theory. Two methods of solving nonlinear equation of motion are employed. One is the direct method using the reanalysis approach to accelerate the solution, and the other is the modal method using eigen-modes of the elastic structure. Through the analysis of VLFS unit of 350m long, the applicability of the modal method to the collapse analysis of VLFS is examined. The basic characteristics of the collapse behavior of VLFS in waves are studied.
