This paper will discuss the techniques and methodology used to develop a laboratory bench test for evaluating a new actively controlled suspension package developed by DaimlerChrysler for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, known as the "Dynamic Handling System" (DHS). The DHS is a hydraulically powered stabilizer bar assist package, designed to improve handling characteristics while not significantly impacting ride quality as well as increase the off-road capability expected of a Jeep brand sport utility vehicle Passive stabilizer bars are designed to share suspension loads over both wheels proportional to the stabilizer bar stiffness and suspension kinematics, thus reducing vehicle roll during lateral acceleration. In contrast, the DHS provides additional active force to the stabilizer bars via hydraulic actuators to further reduce body roll. This active vehicle control is accomplished using a unique electro/hydraulic control subsystem, integrated with the power steering hydraulic system.
