β-diketones and their substituted hydrazone derivatives are found to be good chelating agents and are used for the extractive spectrophotometric determination of various metal ions. The present investigation describes extraction and spectrophotometric determination Of Cu (II) using isonitrosoacetylacetone benzoyl hydrazone(HINAABH). The reagent reacts with Cu (II) to give a yellow coloured complex, which can be quantitatively extracted into n-butanol. The complex shows absorption maximum at 375 ran, whereas absorption due to reagent is negligible. The extraction is quantitative in the pH range of 5.0-9.0. The Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0.08-2.5 ppm of Cu (II). The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of extracted species is 9.8109 x 10~3 dm~3mol~(-1)cm~(-1) and 0.0064 μg mL~(-1) cm~(-2) respectively. The stoichiometry of the extracted species is found to be 1:2. The standard deviation is 0.25. The variation from mean at 95 % confidence limit is 9.88 +-0.17. The effect of various diverse ions on the estimation of Cu (II) has been studied. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive, and reproducible and has been applied for the determination of Cu (II) in synthetic mixtures.and real samples.
