For vaccine development, to paraphrase Dickens, this is the best of times and the worst of times. On the one hand, biotechnology is turning out multiple new antigens for testing, and interest in vaccines has never been greater. On the other hand, biotechnology is showing its limitations in the absence of understanding about pathogenesis and immunology, and the revolution of rising expectations is showing that vaccine production is inadequate.
