Increasing pressure is being put on industry and businesses to move towards sustainable development. This accounts for the maritime industry as well as any other industry. In recognised standards and systems that are established for environmental management, such as ISO and Eco- Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), elements are included which require the businesses to monitor and measure their environmental performance and environmental impacts. An Environmental Performance System (EPS) is an important tool for comprehensive environmental management through: (1) follow-up and measurement of established environmental effort (2) economic steering and control of environmental performance (3) benchmarking An Environmental Performance System improves a company's credibility and profile towards interest groups such as owners, employees, customers, authorities, banks, insurance companies, investors and society in general.
