Starting out as a standard for data exchange format for the web, the Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become instrumental in the development of e-commerce applications and online information services. The true power of XML lies in the tools that process it. SAX and DOM are the most common XML processing models that are used for lower level XML manipulation. Castor XML is open source software that allows Java to XML data binding. This paper empirically evaluates the performance of a three-tier client-server Internet based application using SAX and DOM with JDBC for database connectivity against an identical application designed and built using Castor XML with Castor JDO for Java data object persistence. The advantages and disadvantages of using SAX, DOM and Castor for developing XML applications are also discussed.
