RELIABILITY AND CONTROL PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION OF AN ACTUAL SEMI-ACTIVE STRUCTURAL CONTROL SYSTEM

In the past 15 years, active and semi-active structural control systems have been applied to actual buildings and bridges. However, a reliability of these systems was not discussed enough in previous stages. This can be secured by a system's health monitoring function and a fail-safe function in unpredicted emergency cases. In this paper, the reliability and control performance about the following practice are presented. After the theoretical and experimental study, a semi-active structural control system using a continuous-variable semi-active hydraulic damper with a maximum damping force of 1,000 kN, was applied to an actual 5-story building in 1998. A consideration of health monitoring for the system, fail-safe function, treatment at the time of power failure and trouble of the sensor, control device, computer and communication system, etc., are required. A forced vibration test was carried out to recognize the required functions. These results show the effectiveness of system's functions. Finally, it is presented that the reliability of the system will be secured as well as the control performance.
