Agent Based middleware for Supporting Active Capability in RDBMSs

Triggers provided in most current RDBMSs support active capability in a very limited manner. Event Condition and Action rules, often referred to as ECA rules, are more expressive than triggers and can be used to enhance the native active capability present in the RDBMS. To add a generalized active capability to an RDBMS without modifying it, an ECA agent is introduced between the database server and the client. This paper discusses such an architecture and implementation details of an ECA agent for Sybase preserving a multi-user capability.
