The entrapment condition of LNAPL plays a major role in remediation process affecting the removal efficiency. Effect of two different entrapments of free phase toluene on mass removal efficiency of air sparging and soil vapour extraction (AS/SVE) was investigated using a two dimensional laboratory soil tank. It was found that the mass removal was higher in Test 1, which had a coarse sand lens below the water table than in Test 2, which had a part of coarse lens above the water table. The difference in the system efficiency was attributed to the initial toluene entrapment condition controlled by soil heterogeneity and the degree of remobilisation of toluene and water during system interruption.
