Community Composting Model: Combining Commercial, Industrial, and Residential Organics With Farm Organics to Resolve Common Environmental and Waste Issues

A community composting model was designed, developed, implemented and evaluated as a new diversion model that combines domestic, IC&I sector organic with farm livestock organic manure from 1997 through 1999. The technology used was static open windrows turned on a schedule determined by the composition of the organic. The annual processing was limited to 1,000 tonnes. A pilot business was established to collect and delivery a villages organic from domestic and IC&I organic to be composted with nursery pig and chicken broiler organics. The Canadian Rural Partnership Initiative of Agriculture Agri-Food Canada’s Rural Secretariat funded this organic diversion strategy. Start-up funding and development costs were also covered through combined grants from the Nova Scotia Dept. of Agriculture, the Nova Scotia Resource Recovery Fund Board, Kings Community Economic Development Agency, the Municipality of the County of Kings and from private investment. This community composting model was recognized at theApril 2000 National Rural Conference in Magog, Quebec. Sixteen projects from across Canada were exhibited by the Rural Secretariat during 3-day conference as success stories and promoted as role models. Three examples of this model’s replicated use under varying settings is reported and examined. Success factors and barriers are discussed. Other potential uses will be introduced using the experiences of the examples. One example is a Chicken Hatchery and Broiler farm operation. It is an open static turned windrow with pad and open-end coverall roof. The operation included a commercial collection service for the area IC&I sector, farm organics from surrounding farms and yard and leaf waste from the locale municipality. The facility was constructed toprocess annually up to 5,000 tonnes of organics. The second is a multiple farm operation of Fruit (primarily apples). Grain, Beef and Dairy. The dairy operation was closed and converted to a in door and out door centralized static turned windrow composting facility for domestic, agriculture and IC&I organics. The facility is constructed to process annually up to 10,000 tones of feedstocks per year. The third composting facility is a start up enclosed static turned centralized windrow operation. The feedstocks are mink carcasses from a mink rancher cooperative of one million annual mink harvest, hog waste from a 6,000 livestock operation, future fish waste from locale fishing industry and other organics. The operation is located in a predominately Acadian community. The facility will process annually up to 10,000 tonnes of feedstocks.
