This paper outlines the process adopted by BAE SYSTEMS HF specialists to ensure successful HMI integration on the Nimrod MRA4 aircraft. Focusing on the flight deck design, it details how the Flight Deck Assessment Rig was developed for use in a large-scale risk reduction assessment of the flight deck displays, moding and workload. In answering the question 'is the design acceptable ?', workload and performance measures have been used as key determinants. The success of this approach, supported by a custom-made Data Collection and Analysis Tool, is detailed. The paper also details how assessment data were translated into a set of design changes that balanced product improvement against cost and timescale constraints.
