The effects of carrying a golf bag and the type of shoulder strap used (one shoulder strap or double shoulder strap) on the required muscle effort was quantified using electromyography (EMG). Ten healthy male subjects were tested on a treadmill using both types of strap. Muscular effort in terms of EMG activity was obtained from both left and right Latissimus Dorsi and Trapezius muscles. The results indicated that physiological differentiation did occur in the muscle groups studied during load carrying with the two different strap configurations. The single shoulder strap created high and unequal increases in muscle effort in both the loaded and non-loaded sides, while the double strap produced small but symmetrical increases in muscle effort. The study concludes that the double strap promotes symmetrical spinal posture.
