The use of a flexibly supported bearing is an efficient way to improve bearing stability. This effect can be obtained by using O-rings. The authors also confirmed that herringbone grooved aerodynamic journal bearings supported by O-rings showed the good stability even in ultra-high-speed rotational regions. On the other hand, because of the difficulty of the theoretical handling of dynamic properties of the flexibly elements, many studies for the stability threshold of the flexibly supported bearings treated the flexibly elements as linear elements. In fact, however, the flexibly elements have non-linear properties in wide frequency range. The purpose of this work is to measure the non-linear dynamic properties of O-rings under the situation equal to the case in which they are used by the actual bearing system. Then, the stability threshold of flexibly supported herringbone grooved aerodynamic journal bearings is studied theoretically. Finally, the calculated results are compared with the experimental results.
