BIOAEROSOL FILTRATION RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Bioaerosol filtration research has been conducted as a collaborative effort between faculty and students in the Institute of Technology and the School of Public Health for the past decade. Topics have included aerosolization of fungal and bacterial spores, size characterization of the aerosol, single pass filtration efficiency, microbial growth on loaded filters, efficacy of antimicrobial agents, field measurements in commercial buildings, and the development of a standard test method for bioaerosol collection efficiency on filter media. Two-stage electrostatic filters and media filters have been tested. Outdoor air has been used as the challenge during field tests and controlled loading of fungi and bacteria has been developed for use in the laboratory. This paper summarizes the key results obtained and outlines areas for further work.
