The performances of a novel amphoteric polyacrylamide PAM were studied in strength improvement, retention, drainage and sizing. The results show that the novel PAM (modified PAM) could be used in both acidic papermaking (together with Al{sub}2(SO{sub}4){sub}3) and neutral papermaking. For recycled fibers and non - wood fibers, the modified PAM could improve strength, retention and drainage. In addition to the good performances mentioned - above, the modified PAM could also improve sizing. The sizing degree of paper could be enhanced by more than 50% by adding 0.2% PAM. This is because there is urethane group in the molecule of the modified PAM.
