Comparative study on the effluent of steam explosion deinking and chemical deinking

The present work describes a comparative study on the pollution characteristics of the waster-water derived from steam explosion deinking (SED) and chemical deinking (CD). The conventional pollution index (e.g., The value of COD, BOD and color) analysis is emphasized in this study. All of metal ions contents (e.g. Cu. Zn. Cd. Pb etl.) were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrum analysis. In addition, the content of saccharides (e.g., d-xylose, d-galactose, d-fructose and d-mannose) of the effluent was investigated by ion chromotography. Results obtained show that the pollution loading amount of wastewater from the SED process is remarkably lower than that obtained from chemical de inking. And the extremely low content of various kinds of monosaccharides support the steam explosion deinking results which demonstrate lower hydrocarbon degradation and consequently characterize SED as a deinking process featuring low pollution and high yield. Meanwhile and unexpectedly, an unidentified monosaccharide was discovered in the deinking wastewater.
