Evidence of sulfur species was found on used and regenerated catalysts used for biomass-derived syngas. The regeneration treatment of steam or steam-air followed by H2-reduction was capable of recovering a significant portion of catalyst activity and removing some sulfur from the catalyst bed, but a portion of the sulfur remained as a poison, transforming from sulfides to sulfates and back to sulfides in a cyclic process.
