This paper outlines the basic elements of electrical safety in the workplace and discusses the difficulties in terms of education about safety and the language of legislation. The paper discusses the reasons why electrical accidents which have occurred over the past 100 years continue to happen. Typical accident scenarios are given and recommendations made to avoid such accidents. The paper concludes with the responsibilities placed on electrical engineers by health and safety legislation and describes the duties for electrical engineers and control systems engineers.
