ETTRINGITE ― FRIEND OR FOE?

Ettringite is in some cases associated with expansion and cracking in cementitious materials, but in others it is a major hydration product which contributes to the formation of a strong and durable material. Factors governing the effects of ettringite formation on strength and expansion are discussed, including the roles of calcium hydroxide and alkali.
