Dimerized fatty acids have long been used in polyamide hot melt adhesives. It can be expected that some of the benefits that they add to these adhesives, like flexibility and hydrophobicity, can be transferred to other adhesive resins. Polyurethanes, where the dimer acid is easily introduced via a polyester polyol, are an obvious candidate. Uniqema has developed a range of derivatives of dimerized fatty acids, the Priplasts. These dimer acid based polyester polyols were studied as building blocks for reactive hot melt adhesives. Initially the influence of dimerized fatty acid based polyester polyols on the properties of polyurethane elastomers was tested. Subsequently the properties of reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesives were studied after full cure (final adhesive properties). Thirdly a study was performed on the initial bond of the adhesives (green strength) and ways to improve the green strength. The results of the study are presented in this paper.
