Despite the fact that in recent years there has already been a marked decline (with reference to the kilometrage) in the casualties arising in collisions in which trucks are involved the increased traffic volume means that the commercial vehicle industry is expected to make a further contribution to the improvement of traffic safety. Design improvements of underrun protection systems can bring about a dramatic increase in the safety standard of protection for road partners. With the newly developed energy-absorbing rear underrun protection a further step has been taken to round off MAN's range of top level safety for the protection of road partners. The rear underrun protection meets safety standards which go beyond the specifications of the inadequate European standard ECE R58. If this modem truck safety technology is used accident victims can be avoided in a very high percent of car-truck collisions and the gravity of injuries among car passengers can be reduced.
