Restructuring is the buzzword and trend in power industries world-wide. It is a force to be reckoned with and many countries have joined the bandwagon by implementing power restructuring that caters to their local operating constraints and contexts. The power industry, which was previously vertically integrated under the a central control, is now segmented into generation, distribution, transmission and retail businesses. The segmentation aims to promote a competitive electricity markets by privatising state owned utilities companies and allowing new players, both local and foreign, to participate in the markets. Security and reliability of energy supply will also have to be ensured through the improved efficiency in the operations of these players.
