The paper looks at the work undertaken at MCA to address seamanship and safe operation issues, including the recent developments at IMO MSC74. In particular the author looks at the provisions of a new MSC circular providing advice and guidance to masters and operators on the avoidance of forward flooding. The issues covered include (1) Seamanship in extreme conditions (2) Fitting and maintenance of bilge alarms and monitors (3) Maintenance of hatch covers and watertight areas (4) Maintenance of pumping equipment.
