Soil Disturbance Extent Due to EPB Tunnelling in Shanghai Soft Clay

This paper describes a case history based on monitoring results of ground movements and the changes in undrained shear strength due to an Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shield tunnelling at the Shanghai Bund Tourist tunnel (SBTT). The relationship between range of longitudinal ground surface settlements (S) and depth of tunnel centre-line (H) is obtained according to the monitoring results. The range of transverse settlement (W) of ground surface is related to depth of tunnel centre-line (H) and tunnel radius (R). The soil disturbance degree is defined as the ratio of undrained shear strength after tunnelling to those before tunnelling. The ranges of soil disturbance, which are marked by the changes in undrained shear strength, are obtained around tunnel by the results of static cone penetration (SCP) and vane shear tests.
