This work is concerned with the propagation of time-harmonic waves in an unbounded elastic solid containing empty cylindrical cavities that are randomly distributed in a slab region. It is known that, for an incident antiplane (SH) wave, the average wave motion in the solid is governed by an integro-differential equation. An approximate solution to this equation is obtained by assuming that the average wave motion inside the slab is the sum of a forward attenuated wave and a backward attenuated wave. It is shown that this approximation yields accurate results for the attenuation, velocity, reflection, and transmission in the solid.
