In this contribution the recent results on EUROFER 97, an industrial batch of 3.5 tons are summarised. Regarding the physical metallurgy, transformation behaviour, hardenability and major mechanical properties this material behaves as expected from forerunning developmental alloys of type OPTIFER. To increase the strength of this material two alloys with 0,3 and 0,5 % yttriumoxide were produced via a powder production route. They show in the as-hipped condition good tensile properties. Finally the EU longterm development strategy to qualify these materials for fusion reactor application is described.
