DYNAMIC RATING OF POWER TRANSFORMERS, MANAGING A LARGE ASSET

In 1994 the Wilson Transformer Company recognised the latent need for a modern monitoring and control system to increase availability and achieve optimised operating of power transformers. Ideally this would be microprocessor-based but the initial development work was based on the use of PLCs. The focus of the work was to better meet the needs of transformer users, so we successively entered upon collaborative development projects with three of Australia's leading electricity utilities. Our first project, which gave birth to the PLCbased Wilson Transformer Management System ("WTMS"), was with Eastern Energy (now TXU) 1 and the first WTMS went into service in New Zealand in late 1995. Our second project with SPI PowerNet widened the scope and functionality of the WTMS and since then many more WTMS systems have gone into service in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, UK and China. Our third project with Energex resulted in the new-generation system for dynamic rating, monitoring, control and communications (DRMCCO) for power transformers. This is a quantum leap improvement over the WTMS regarding functionality and ruggedness.
