INTERACTION AND ITS EFFECT ON SUBSTANCE TRANSPORT IN CONCRETE

This paper summarises the present knowledge on interaction and its effect on substance transport in concrete. Theories of substance transport accompanied with interaction are briefly reviewed. Different types of interaction, including chemical reaction or adsorption, physical adsorption, are described. The emphasis is put on chloride, but the similarities and differences compared to other substances, such as water (liquid and vapour), carbon dioxide and hydroxides, are pointed out. The theoretical analysis shows that an interaction, in general, retards the transport processes. The profile of substance penetration into concrete is strongly dependent on the type of interaction. Some experimental findings from the literature are presented as examples to show the effect of interaction on transport processes. The test methods for determination of interaction effect are critically reviewed and some suggestions for the improvement of test methods, as well as future studies, are given.
