Since its first low NO_x burner retrofits in May 1997, Advanced Burner Technologies has retrofitted, or has under contract, approximately 10,000 MW of large utility boilers with our Opti-Flow low NO_x burner. In most cases the Opti-Flow burner has replaced an existing low NO_x burner. The fuels ranged from eastern high sulfur and western low sulfur bituminous to Powder River Basin sub-bituminous coals. This paper summarizes three experiences where NO_x levels below 0.25 lb/10~6 Btu are attained firing PRB without overfire air. When simulating overfire air NO_x levels of 0.2 and below have been demonstrated.
