This paper sets out a framework for the calculation of the water-tightness testing criteria for the performance of building envelopes. A computational fluid dynamics method is used to obtain the characteristics of wind-driven rain acting on a building envelope. The variation of characteristics with environmental conditions and building geometry are discussed. Making use of such information and together with extreme statistics, the testing criteria for watertightness performance of a building envelope can be defined. This method is applied to buildings in Singapore and their watertightness testing criteria calculated. The effect of building height on the criteria is also discussed.
