Development of a dedicated ethanol (E-85)-powered Chevrolet Silverado for the 1999 Ethanol Vehicle Challenge

The student members of the Society of Automotive Engineers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) accepted the "1999 Ethanol Vehicle Challenge." Team UIC converted a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado to the dedicated use of commercial ethanol (E-85). The goals of the competition are to reduce emissions, increase fuel economy and facilitate cold startability while maintaining good vehicle handling and performance. In addition to the conversion, our intent was to integrate elements into the vehicle's original systems in a way that is easily reproduced. The paper details how Team UIC accomplished each of these goals.
