A review of the latest theoretical developments of particle engulfment and pushing (PEP) by solidifying interfaces reveals some of their major limitations. They include the treatment of inert (non-reactive) particles and isotropic (non-faceted) particle-melt systems. However, some of the most interesting applications of the theory, such as solidification of metal matrix composites, of spheroidal graphite iron, of some ternary eutectics, and of ceramic superconductors involve reactive particles and/or facetted interfaces. The paper will summarize the specific examples where PEP theories find applications in metallurgical processes, and outline the methodology for further theoretical developments.
