The physical properties of the dispersoid, the reactions between the dispersoid and the matrix and the solidification conditions are the factors controlling the microstructure of cast aluminium alloy matrix composites. The presence of dispersoid also affects the distribution of various defects normally associated with the cast products. An understanding on the contribution of each of the above factors individually and collectively is essential to tailor the microstructure and in turn the properties of the composite. The evolution of microstructure in stir cast Al alloy matrix composites dispersed with particles of silicon carbide, graphite and flyash and short fibres of silicon carbide and carbon is discussed.
