Surface-enhanced IR absorption (SEIRA) is a phenomenon that IR absorption of molecules adsorbed on metal films consisting of nanoparticles is significantly enhanced. The IR spectroscopy using the SEIRA effect in the Kretschmann ATR configuration can be applied successfully to in situ study of electrochemical interfaces. So far, the metal nanoparticle films have been prepared by vacuum evaporation. Recently, the chemical (or electroless) deposition technique has been applied successfully in preparing nanoparticle films of Au, Ag, and Pt.
