The use of waterborne coatings in industrial maintenance applications has increased greatly over the past two decades. The reason for this increase is due to several factors. Current and proposed future regulations on volatile organic content (VOC) are designed to limit the impact of coatings on the environment, and waterborne coatings provide a route to lower VOC. Other safety and health advantages include lower concern over worker exposure to hazardous solvents, easy and safe cleanup, and less hazardous disposal. Finally, extensive testing has shown that waterbome coatings can also offer excellent performance. This paper describes a 20-year case study on the use of waterbome acrylic coatings in the restoration and maintenance of an historical structure located in a harsh coastal environment - the Hunting Island Lighthouse.
