Financial pressure to reduce maintenance costs during the 1990s lead to a significant increase in the distance many classes of multiple unit could operate between bogie overhaul. A significant cost penalty would arise from more wheelsets requiring replacement at the Light Maintenance Depot rather than during the overhaul of bogies. This paper describes one approach to extending the life of wheels, namely reducing the diameter at which the wheels must be scrapped, and therefore the probability of requiring such replacement.
