A pinhole defect is a typical casting defect, and the generation of pinholes can be attributed to several factors. In order to establish measures to prevent pinhole defects, the causes for the defect generation must first be determined. In many cases, however, the source of these defects is too small to be determined by the naked eye. In this study, a surface analysis method called SEM centre dot EDS analysis is performed on more than 500 instances of pinhole defects. The sources of the defects are determined, and the data is classified according to the sources in order to obtain the standard analysis data. When pinhole defects that occurred under actual operation are compared with the standard analysis data, it is shown that the analysis data can effectively be used for determining the defect generation factors, and measures can be taken to correct these defects.
