Metallic and alloy recovery of ferrous charge materials was investigated to determine the effect of melting and material variables. The furnace variables included melting with the furnace covered (sealed) and open in order to impact the atmosphere above the molten bath. The material variables included light and heavy steel scrap as measured by surface area to volume ratio. Both rusty and clean materials were evaluated as measured by the percent iron oxide on the material. A technique for measuring the percent iron oxide was developed. Results show the value of keeping the furnace covered during the melting and holding of molten cast iron. Slag generation, metallic recovery and alloy recovery are reported for 21 different heats. There were some unexplained metallic losses. Materials investigated include pig iron, cast iron scrap, steel scrap, and briquetted cast iron borings.
