ANNUAL MEDICS FOR THE SOUTHERN GREAT PLAINS

This report updates the examination of the potential of annual medics (Medicago spp.) as components of southern Great Plains pasture, concentrating on forage yield, seed production, and persistence from late summer plantings in clean tilled as well asinterseeded conditions. Studies have included burr medic (burclover, M. polymorpha), button medic (buttonclover, M. orbicularis), and rigid medic [M. rigidula (L.) All. and M. rigiduloides E. Small]. All these medics can contribute to forage yield and nutritive value. In September 1999, 327 world collection accessions of rigid medics were planted at two locations to identify the most adapted strains. From these, 34 best accessions were planted in replicated tests at two locations in September 2000, and the 12 most promising entries were advance for additional testing and seed production in fall 2001-spring 2002.
