Shock-cushioning mechanics of shoe soles is studied theoretically using a simple walking model and the Maxwell model for a viscoelastic body.We propose a viscoelastic property of polyurethane suitable for shoe soles, which can realize both high shock cushioning and stability. For example, storage and loss moduli of polyurethane that can effectively reduce impact on a foot have been clarified and their preferable numerical region is presented. In addition, our newly developed polyurethane foams and commercially distributed current sole materials are mapped on a viscoelasticity space and their wear property as a shoe sole is discussed.
