Some general observations and remarks provide the backdrop to the topic. This is followed by specific considerations and some selected case studies on Renewable Energy projects/programmes in developing countries, mainly cases from Asia and Latin America, which are presented in the following pages. The attention is focussing on micro-level experiences in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Peru. Biomass or Biogas projects, as well as solar cooker projects at the household-level could not be covered in this paper. The first part of the paper covers general benefits of using renewable energy sources and corresponding production and delivery mechanisms in developing countries, while the latter part shows concrete examples of renewable energy implementation with a critical analysis of limiting factors and lessons learnt.
