(1) The future increase in global energy consumption is mainly caused by the energy demand in the developing countries. Owing to the energy mix to be expected and the technologies that will be used, emissions of air and climate pollutants will grow disproportionately. (2) The objective must be to guarantee the long-term supply of energy at minimum costs while ensuring that the energy supply system is ecologically acceptable. This requires (1) dissociating the energy demand from economic growth and (2) reducing the negative impact on health and the environment caused by the generation and consumption of energy. (3) Measures: a) improvement of the rational use of energy, b) use of low-emission fuels and c) use of energy sources which reduce negative environmental impacts. (4) In this context the promotion of renewable energies is of special importance.
